Description

There are rare cars, there are important cars and then there are the few that occupy a defining place in the history of the model itself. McLaren P1 ‘XP2R’ belongs unequivocally in that last category. More than simply a limited production P1, ‘XP2R’ is one of the very few surviving experimental prototypes from the McLaren P1 development programme, a works car created to help shape one of the most significant hypercars of the modern era. Its role reached far beyond that of a conventional pre-production vehicle, contributing to the engineering and validation process that underpinned the P1’s reputation. In its early testing days, the car wore race camouflage and underwent rigorous vMax testing, active aerodynamic development/Race Mode calibration, chassis and damper tuning, Pirelli tyre evaluation, Akebono brake system approval and the wider programme associated with McLaren’s sub-seven-minute Nürburgring objective of which it accomplished. Setting an average speed of over 111mph during its timed Nurburgring lap. In an era where provenance is often overstated, XP2R offers something genuinely exceptional. Its importance does not rest on colour, optional specification, or celebrity ownership but on its direct connection to the creation and development of the P1 itself. For the discerning collector, that distinction is considerable. Following its factory development life, XP2R was returned to McLaren Automotive, stripped back in its entirety to its carbon-fibre monocoque and rebuilt to final production specification, benefitting from all the updates developed during the car’s production run. The result is a truly unique proposition, a historically significant prototype presented with the finish, completeness and usability expected of a world-class collector car. It is this combination that makes XP2R so compelling, a machine of real engineering significance, yet one that presents today as a fully realised and highly desirable road car.
